Medicaid is changing. We’re here to help.
Have a Medicaid letter or a question about your coverage? CHCI can help you understand your next step and connect you with trusted assistance.
Information reviewed October 2, 2026
Start with these three steps
-
Read your notices
Keep letters from Utah Medicaid or the Department of Workforce Services (DWS). Follow the deadline on each notice.
-
Keep your information current
Update your address, phone number, and email in myCase or call DWS at 1-866-435-7414.
-
Ask for help early
Ask a CHCI team member if you need help understanding a letter, applying, renewing coverage, or finding the right contact.
What is changing and when
OCTOBER 1, 2026
Changes for some immigrant groups
Eligibility rules changed for some immigrant groups. Family members may have different coverage options, including children and pregnant people. Read your own notice and ask DWS about your case.
JANUARY 1, 2027
Reviews every six months
Some adults enrolled in Adult Expansion Medicaid or Targeted Adult Medicaid (TAM) will have reviews every six months. Other Medicaid programs keep their existing review schedules. Exclusions apply.
JANUARY 1, 2027
Community engagement requirements
Some adults ages 19–64 in Adult Expansion or TAM may need to meet an 80-hour monthly community engagement standard. There are different qualifying routes, exclusions, and exceptions. Ask DWS what applies to you.
JANUARY 1, 2027
Less time to cover past medical bills
Utah says coverage before the application month will be limited to one month for Adult Expansion and two months for most other Medicaid programs. Apply promptly if you think you may qualify.
Questions you may have
Does everyone have to meet the new requirements?
No. The new adult review and community engagement rules do not apply to everyone. Being excluded from community engagement does not always mean you are excluded from six-month reviews. DWS can explain your program and any exclusion.
What if I cannot work or volunteer?
Ask DWS about exclusions or hardship exceptions. Examples include pregnancy or postpartum Medicaid, certain caregivers of a child age 13 or younger or a person with a disability, medical frailty, and participation in a substance-use treatment program. DWS determines what applies to your case.
What if I am American Indian or Alaska Native?
Verified Federal Indian or American Indian/Alaska Native status excludes members from the new community engagement and six-month review requirements. If DWS has not verified your status, ask what proof to send. Utah asks for verification by January 1, 2027.
Should I wait until January to respond to a letter?
No. Respond to current notices and requests by their deadlines. The upcoming changes do not cancel an existing review or request for information.
What if my coverage ended or my application was denied?
Keep the notice. If you disagree, follow its appeal instructions and deadline. Ask CHCI about staying connected to care, medications, and available payment assistance. You can also ask about applying again based on your current circumstances.
Can CHCI tell me that I qualify?
CHCI provides education, navigation, and assistance. DWS makes the Medicaid eligibility decision. Your eligibility can differ from another family member’s.
What if I need help in another language?
Tell a CHCI team member which language you prefer and ask for interpreter support.
Get help with your next step
Contact your CHCI clinic and ask about coverage assistance. If coverage problems affect your medications or ongoing care, tell your care team.
Protect your information. Do not send Social Security numbers, immigration documents, or financial records through ordinary text, social media, or unsecured email. Ask for a secure way to provide requested documents.
